    The automotive sector

In 2014, the automotive industry in Poland was valued at around USD 119 billion, accounting for 7.4% of the country’s GDP in that financial year. The sector, which currently employs approximately 166,200 employees, has received total Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) to the tune of USD 12.63 billion.

Exports of automobiles to other European Union member states is a major driver of the industry in Poland. According to official estimates, revenues from the export of automobiles in 2014 were valued at USD 19.57 billion, indicating that around 77% of the annual sales of automobiles in Poland were generated from export earnings.

In fact, almost 98% of the total production value of 578,400 automobiles manufactured in Poland in 2014 was exported.

This indicates that a large number of international automobile manufacturers have shifted operations to Poland in order to meet demand in the Central & Eastern European (CEE) region, and the European Union as a whole.

Factors such as a convenient and attractive geographical position at the heart of the European Union, access to a highly-skilled and wage-competitive labour force, the presence of a well-established supply chain structure of manufacturers of parts, components and accessories related to the automobile manufacturing industry, have all contributed to foreign manufacturers establishing their production facilities in Poland.

During the period 2004 – 2015, the Polish Information & Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ) estimated that a total of 535 investment projects were conducted in the Polish automotive industry.

The largest foreign investors in this sector in Poland in recent years have been: Volkswagen, with an investment of USD 841.8 million; Fiat, with an investment of approximately USD 371.5 million; and General Motors, with an investment of USD 315 million.
